About JEE Main Exam:

Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-Main), formerly All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), is an examination organised by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India. Introduced in the year 2002, this national level competitive test is for admission to various undergraduate engineering and architecture courses in institutes accepting the AIEEE score, mainly 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and 23 Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs).

The examination, originally called sometimes AIEEE, was renamed as Joint Entrance Examination (Main) in April 2017. The AIEEE was generally held on the last Sunday of April and results were announced in the last week of May or the first week of June. Post the rename, the exam is held in the first week of April. Candidates are ranked on an all-India basis and on state basis. Thus, they get an All India Rank (AIR) and a State Rank (SR).From 2019, JEE Main will be conducted two times in a year and it will be conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA).

About JEE Advanced Exam:

Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced (JEE-Advanced), formerly the Indian Institutes of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) is an annual engineering college entrance examination in India. It is conducted by one of the seven zonal IITs (IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati) under guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). It is used as the sole admission test by the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Other universities like the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISERs) and the premier Indian Institute of Science (IISc) also use the score obtained in JEE Advanced as the basis for admission. Any student who took admission to IITs could not appear for the JEE-Advanced exam in the next year, but the same was not the case with IISc, IISER, RGIPT and other institutes as these institutes only used JEE Advanced score for admission. The examination is organised each year by one of the various IITs, on a round robin rotation pattern. It has a very low admission rate (about 9,369 in 479,651 in 2012; which was around 1.95%) The latest admission rate in 2017 was around 0.92% in IITs (about 11,000 out of 1,200,000 who applied for JEE Main). It is recognised as one of the toughest examinations in the world and is one of the most difficult examinations of India to qualify.

In 2013 the exam, originally called the IIT-JEE, was renamed as JEE (Advanced), along with the AIEEE being renamed JEE(Main). From 2017, IITs started conducting JEE internationally to give admission to international students.

Structure of JEE Mains Exam:

The examination consists of only two papers: Paper 1 for B.E./BTech courses and Paper 2 for BArch courses. A candidate can opt for any or both the papers. Paper 1 is mandatorily a computer based test (called Online mode) from 2019. Till 2018, there was an option between OMR based and computer based mode. Paper 1 has three subject sections: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Each one of the 3 subject sections consists of 30 questions each with equal weightage for every question. All questions are multiple choice objective-type questions each of which has four choices. Out of the four choices for a given question, only one choice is correct. Every correct answer will receive 4 marks each and every incorrectly attempted question will receive a negative marking of -1 mark. There is no negative marking applied if the question is left unanswered. Paper 2 has three sections: Mathematics, Drawing, and Aptitude. Mathematics, and Aptitude sections have multiple choice objective-type questions and the Drawing section has drawing-based questions. The duration of each paper is three hours. Candidates are not allowed to carry any textual material, calculators, logarithmic tables or electronic devices into the examination hall. The number of questions and their maximum marks have been variable through the years. The questions are based on a syllabus that is common to syllabus of all the state boards in India and the Central Board of Secondary Education. Candidates can opt for question papers either in English or in Hindi language.

For admission to B.Tech or B.E. courses in the participating institutes the candidate is required to take the Paper 1; for admission to B.Arch or B. Planning courses the candidate is required to take Paper 2. The examination was conducted in offline pen and paper mode till 2010. In 2011, as per the orders of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, CBSE conducted Paper 1 in Computer-Based-Test mode for the first one lakh candidates who opted for the same, while the remaining students took the examination in the conventional pen and paper mode. The number of attempts which a candidate can avail at the examination is limited to three in consecutive years. As of 2018, the top 224,000 rankers of JEE (Main) will qualify to appear for the second and final level of examination: JEE (Advanced)

In 2010 the Ministry of Human Resource Development announced plans to replace JEE by 2013 with a common entrance test for all government engineering colleges which will be called Indian Science Engineering Eligibility Test (ISEET). Accordingly, MHRD proposes to set up National Testing Service, which will be an autonomous and self-sustained agency to conduct this new common entrance test.
