Rishabh Pant becomes fastest Indian keeper to claim 50 Test dismissals, breaks Dhoni’s record
Rishabh Pant has broken MS Dhoni’s wicket-keeping record for India by becoming the fastest Indian wicket-keeper to claim 50 dismissals in Test cricket.
Rishabh Pant claimed his 50th test dismissal in his 11th test during India vs West Indies on September 1, 2019. Former skipper MS Dhoni had taken 15 tests to get to 50 Test dismissals. Pant reach the milestone by dismissing West Indies’ Kraigg Brathwaite off a delivery by Ishant Sharma in the second innings of West Indies in the second Test.




National Sports Day 2019 being observed today: List of Government Schemes to promote Sports in India
National Sports Day 2019: India celebrates the Day today, 29 August, to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, who was born on August 29, 1905. The National Sports Day is also known as the Rashtriya Khel Divas. On this Day, President Ram Nath Kovind confers the National Sports Awards, National Adventure Awards, Arjuna Award, Khel Ratna, Dronacharya Award and Dhyanchand Award to recognise the exceptional achievements of Indian sportspersons. This year’s list of National Sports Award winners includes prominent names like Ravindra Jadeja, Deepa Malik, Bajrang Punia and many others.

The National Sports Day is observed every year to spread awareness about the importance of sports and games in the life of every individual. The Day remembers the national sports personality Dhyan Chand who was one of the greatest field hockey players of all time. Famously known as “The Wizard”, he displayed superb ball control and extraordinary goal-scoring feats. He won three Olympic gold medals in Hockey field in the years 1928, 1932, and 1936. In his Sports career spanning over 22 years, he scored over 400 goals. He was conferred with the third-highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan in 1956. He was born in Allahabad on August 29, 1905.




Feroz Shah Kotla to be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium: DDCA
Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi will be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium in the memory of former DDCA President. The DDCA (Delhi and District Cricket Association) made the announcement on August 27, 2019.
The DDCA decided to rename the stadium after the former DDCA president, Arun Jaitley, who breathed his last on August 24, 2019. Speaking on the same, current DDCA president Rajat Sharma said, “What can be better to have it named after the man who got it rebuilt under his presidentship. It was Arun Jaitley’s support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud.”
The DDCA President clarified that the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium will be renamed as Arun Jaitley Stadium, the ground will, however, continue to be called the Feroz Shah Kotla.

US Open 2019: Sumit Nagal becomes first Indian to beat Roger Federer in a set
US Open 2019: Sumit Nagal has become the first-ever Indian tennis player to win a set against tennis giant Roger Federer. The Indian achieved this feat on August 26, 2019 during his first-round match against Federer in the ongoing US Open.
The 22-year-old Sumit Nagal outclassed the legendary Roger Federer in the first round 6-4. However, Federer bounced back and won the remaining three matches, 1-6,2-6,4-6.

With the feat, Nagal became the fourth player to win the opening set against Roger Federer at the US Open after Peter Wessels (Netherlands), Jose Acasuso (Argentina) and Frances Tiafoe (America).
Sumit Nagal and Roger Federer were very close in the first round, with both going back and forth and at one stage, the round was tied at 4-4 but then Nadal won continuous games to win the first set 6-4.
Roger Federer got his game back in the second set and continued the winning momentum into the third and the fourth set.




Durand Cup 2019: Gokulam Kerala beats Mohun Bagan to win title
Durand Cup 2019: It was a stunning victory of Gokulam Kerala FC over Mohun Bagan with a 2-1 score. Marcus Joseph, captain of Gokulam Kerala, scored a goal in each half to lead his time to win Durand Cup. Mohun Bagan is a 16-time champion but lost final match with Gokulam Kerala. Marcus scored 11 goals in the entire tournament including two in the final match.

Now, Gokulam Kerala has become second football club of Kerala to win the title after 22 years. The match was played at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. It was 1997 when FC Kochin won the title for the first time. I.M. Vijayan was the captain at that time.

Marcus Joseph (Gokulam Kerala FC): He won Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards.

CK Ubaid (Gokulam Kerala FC): Golden Glove award for outstanding performance.



About Durand Cup

• The Durand Cup was first held in 1888 in India. It is Asia’s oldest football tournament and a third oldest football tournament in the world.
• Initially, it was started as Army Cup for British Indian Army troops but later it was opened up for civilians also.
• Mohammedan Sporting Club from Kolkata was the first civilian team who won the tournament in 1940.
• This tournament and its matches are co-hosted by Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS) and Osians.
• The winning team gets three trophies – The President’s Cup, The Durand Cup and the Shimpla Trophy.
• Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are the most successful teams with 16 wins each. There is a total of 16 teams that participate in the Durand Cup every year.




National Sports Awards 2019 – List of All the Winners
Selection Committee for Sports Awards 2019 nominated Deepa Malik for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2019 and 19 other payers including Ravindra Jadeja for the prestigious Arjuna Award. Deepa Malik will be the first female para-athlete to win the prestigious sports award of India. She will be joint recipient with wrestler Bajrang Punia for highest sporting honour.

Selection Committee for Sports Awards 2019 also selected 19 sportspersons for the Arjuna Award, including cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, hockey player Chinglensana Kangujam, footballer Gurpreet Singh Sandhu track and field players Tejinder Pal Singh Toor, Mohammed Anas and Swapna Barman and shooter Anjum Moudgil.

About Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna

• This award is named after former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. It was instituted in 1991-92.
• The first recipient of the award was Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, who was honoured for the performance in the year 1991–92.
• The latest winners of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award are Virat Kohli and Mirabai Chanu.
• In this award, a medal, a citation and 7.5 lakh rupees are given to the winner.

About Arjuna Award

• National Arjuna Award was instituted in 1961, it is India’s second-highest sporting award after Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
• Arjuna Award bestowed upon sportsperson for consistently outstanding performance for four years.
• Sportsperson in recognition of their consistently outstanding performance for four years in National sports can be nominated for this award.
• Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports conferred this award. It carries bronze statuette of Arjuna, a scroll and a monetary award of 5 lakh rupees.

Ravi Shastri retained as Team India Head Coach
Ravi Shastri has been reinstated as the Head Coach of Indian Cricket Team. His appointment was confirmed by the tweet of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), “Cricket Advisory Committee member @therealkapildev says the decision to reappoint @RaviShastriOfc as #TeamIndia’s Head Coach was unanimous.”

Shahtri was among the five shortlisted candidates who were interviewed for the post of Team India’s Head Coach by Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC has now given two-year extension to Shastri. He will serve as the Head Coach till the World Cup T20 that will end in 2021. Shastri gave the interview on Skype from West Indies. Ravi Shastri was first named as the Head Coach of Team India on July 11, 2017. At that time, he was appointed to serve the post till ICC World Cup 2019.




Aishwarya Pissay becomes first Indian to win world title in motorsports
Aishwarya Pissay won the FIM World Cup in women’s category in Hungary, becoming the first-ever Indian to win a world title in motorsports. Aishwarya Pissay also finished second in the FIM Junior category.

Aishwarya had finished all the rounds of the World Cup with an overall tally of 65 points. The 23-year-old won the first round in Dubai, came third in Portugal, fifth in Spain and finished fourth in the last round in Hungary. Aishwarya ended the competition just four points ahead of Portugal’s Rita Vieira in the final standings for women. Aishwarya and Vieira were the top contenders for the World Cup.




BCCI agrees to come under NADA, cricketers to undergo doping tests
The BCCI after years of opposition has finally agreed to come under the ambit of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). The BCCI stated in writing that it would adhere to NADA’s anti-doping policy.

The information was shared by Sports Secretary Radheshyam Jhulaniya on August 9 after his meeting with BCCI CEO Rahul Johri. Jhulaniya stated that from henceforth, all cricketers will be tested by NADA. Till now, the BCCI had opposed NADA’s doping tests and the cricketers were kept out of it.




Hashim Amla: South African cricketer Hashim Amla retires from international cricket
Hashim Amla: Hashim Amla announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket on August 8, 2019. The South African cricketer has hit 55 centuries in 349 matches across all cricketing formats in his 15-year cricketing career. Amla said that he will continue to play domestic cricket.

Hashim Amla has made more than 18000 runs in his international career, which includes 55 centuries and 88 above fifty scores. Amla’s retirement announcement comes just a few days after another South African cricketer Dale Steyn announced his retirement from Test cricket.

While making his retirement announcement, Amla thanked all the fans for energising him when times were tough and celebrating with him during success.




Hashim Amla Records

Hashim Amla is the only South African cricketer to score a triple century in a Test match and holds the record of highest test score by a South African with 311 runs not out in a test match against England at the Oval in London in 2012.

Hashim Amla also holds the record of highest test runs by a South African against India, England and the West Indies. He also has the highest test score against Australia in the post-unity period.
